On the initiative of the Foundation for the International Prevention of Genocide and Mass Atrocities1 aTask Force2 was established in January 2012 to prepare a report on the EU’s capabilities to prevent massatrocities and to foster a dialogue on their improvement. The Task Force reviewed best practice in the area, conducted interviews with officials of theEuropean Union institutions and governments, and held consultative meetings with leading experts, EU policy makers, representatives of EU administrations and NGOs in Brussels, Paris and Berlin.

The Task Force’s report analyses the strengths and weaknesses of EU capabilities in the area of massatrocities prevention, and makes recommendations to improve the EU’s capacity to prevent andrespond to mass atrocities. This event presents the final report of the Task Force, beginning with a presentation by a Co-Chair ofthe Task Force. This is followed by a panel discussion, in which leading politicians will express theirviews on the challenges to be addressed by the European Union institutions and member states in orderto better prevent mass atrocities.
